Living Water John 7:30-53
Why do you want water? Because you are thirsty. Why do you want living water? Because you are thirsty. Remember, one can hunger and thirst after righteousness. We want water so that we will not thirst.
We want water so we will not thirst in the mind. Desperately, we want the universe to "make sense." Is it really just a thrown together collection of particles, or is there a purpose to it? We want water so we will not thirst in the heart. Each of us has been failed by someone, let down by someone, left longing for promised comfort and strength. We want water so we will not thirst in our strength. We chase security in every form. We invest, we save, we gamble, we build - all so that we may be secure against tomorrow. And at the end of tomorrow is death; and how are we to be secure against that? We want water so we will not thirst in our souls. Our time cries out for completeness, for integrity. "Something is missing in our lives" - and whole generations have set out to find it, and become lost.
In all these things Christ provides the answers. His Holy Spirit, the living water flowing from us, quenches these thirsts.
The universe does make sense, for it was created from the mind of God by the hand of Christ. The author is at hand. Jesus never fails us; when all others retreat, he is with us still. Jesus is our security in this life and our promise of resurrection to come. No one else has come through what he has come through; no one else could make those promises and keep them. In Christ we find completeness, for He is righteousness, peace, love and justice; indeed all things which are good flow from him. In him, we find perfection.
If you find yourself thirsting, ask yourself this: is it because He does not provide living water? Or because you will not come to the fountain and drink?
