Calling the Tune Luke 7:29-35
One of the minor frustrations of my youth was the tableside jukebox. For those too young to remember, this was a device which contained several dozen popular recordings of the day, of all styles and artists, which you could hear by inserting a dime and pressing a combination of buttons. My parents militantly forbade us to use this device. It seems they knew our taste in music very well, and did not want to hear any more of "The Teddie Bears' Picnic." The box was there--and made money--because people like to "call the tune." It's just as true in our dealings with God: we like to call the tune with him, also. Jesus pictures here a group of children in a marketplace, complaining because they can't call the tune. Children--we are the children of God. We may think we should be allowed to push the buttons on the jukebox, but Father knows better. We want to control God for our own ends; so sometimes we "invent" a God of our own liking. How?
In the marketplace--this is where most of us have our hopes and dreams. We see all the things the world has to offer, and we must buy. We see the people going through; we must have this one for a mate and that one for a friend. Most of all we see people who are "successful" - and we want to be like them. So we push the buttons on God's jukebox. Dance--for some, God is of no use other than being a cosmic blessing machine. If only we could find the right prayer formula, and if only we had enough faith, God would give us nothing but good times. Dirge--for some, God is of no use until there is a time of trouble or sadness. This God must hide in the closet until called, but when called He is to rush out and fix our troubles.
We push the buttons on the jukebox labeled "God," and no music comes out. Why? Because the performance is not from a machine, but live performers--who take their direction not from the buttons but from God. The prophets did not work to please the people, but God. The Son of Man could only do what the Father showed him to do. The Truth cannot be changed by pushing God's buttons. The God of the jukebox exists only in our minds and wishes; the Christ of the Cross is existence itself. You can't call the tune--but you can sing along.
