Praise the LORD, all
you nations; extol him, all you peoples. For great is his love
toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise
the LORD.
(Psalms 117:1-2 NIV)
Brevity is considered a virtue, even in writing. The psalmist has
outlined for us two things that are of great importance. Not
surprisingly, these two things are echoed in communion. Consider
them:
First, we are to see his love towards us. Communion reflects this
in that it reminds us of the bread being his body, and the cup being
his blood, that he was sacrificed for our sake. As John 3:16 puts
it, “for God so loved the world…” We see that every time we take
communion — his love, and action, for us.
Second, we see that his love endures forever. God is a faithful
God; he does not change his mind because a few days have passed.
Communion shows is that also. It is offered to all who believe. That
includes those who are repenting, and coming back to the faith. It
includes those who have sinned over the week between communion
offerings. God is faithful towards us; his love does not vary with
the seasons or the tides.
As you partake today, give earnest consideration to the offering
that he is making to you. He is welcoming you back into his church,
saying that you belong here. If you take communion with us, you are
one of us. That will crecur, repeated every time we take communion.
Ithis great love for us and His enduring patience. Consider this
well, and then take in a worthy manner.
